How to Get Over a Breakup

Take care of yourself

It’s normal to feel hurt, sad, or angry after a breakup. There are things you can do to make it easier.

  • Spend time with people who care about you.
  • Do things you enjoy.
  • Let yourself feel upset or sad.
  • Accept that the relationship is over.
  • Give some space between you and your ex.
  • Remember that the pain of breaking up gets better over time.
  • View the breakup as a chance for a fresh start.

Don’t try to get revenge

Breakups can cause a lot of anger, especially if someone treated you badly.

  • Getting revenge makes it harder to get over a breakup.
  • Revenge is bad for your emotional health.
  • Don’t damage their things, hurt them, or say mean things about them to other people.
  • Don’t let your anger get you into legal trouble.
  • Vent to people who support you instead.
  • Put your energy into things that are important to you. Focus on yourself, not on your ex.
