How to Break Up
Why do people break up?
- Breaking up is a normal part of dating. People break up for lots of different reasons.
- Want different things in the relationship.
- Don’t have enough in common (values, interests).
- Get put down, controlled, or hurt by the other person.
- Act controlling or hurtful to the other person.
- No reason. People can end a relationship that they just don’t want to be in anymore.
How do you break up with your partner?
- Tell the other person you don’t want to be a couple anymore, in person or over the phone. Do not tell them in person if you think there could be violence.
- Be clear and respectful.
- If you still want to be friends, know that it might be too hard for the other person.
- Vent to your friends if you are upset instead of fighting. Don’t say things to hurt their feelings on purpose, don’t damage their things, don’t threaten them, don’t throw things, and don’t hit them.
- Be kind to yourself. Breaking up can be hard for both people.
